Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s only English talk show Hello On Two (HOT) turns five this year. Its hosts tell DENNIS CHUA their journey this far.

AHMAD Zamil Idris is best known as a finalist in the first season of Malaysian Idol.

He finished seventh in the popular reality talent show on 8TV in 2004 and delivered a praiseworthy rendition of Andrea Bocelli’s hit song, The Prayer.

The grand nephew of legendary film star Haji Mahadi is a recognisable face on “breakfast” television show Hello On Two (HOT).

He shares the hour beginning 7.30am, Mondays to Thursdays on TV2, with his co-hosts Terrence Dass, Raja Yasmin Raja Zaini, Stephen Chiang and Annie Joseph.

The five-year-old HOT, co-produced by Rafidah Kamaludin and Noriza Salleh, is RTM’s only English language talk show.

Screened daily in its first three years, HOT moved to TV1 in 2008 before returning to TV2 the following year.

Zamil, who hails from Seremban, says: “We were on air daily from 9am to 10am for a year, but time and programming constraints soon gave us a five-day TV week. Beginning this year, we broadcast four days a week at 7.30am, making us rise earlier than usual.”

An accounting graduate from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia, Zamil, 32, was active in theatre during his schooldays in Sekolah Sri Inai, Hulu Klang.

He won his first singing contest at the university and subsequently worked in a bank, before auditioning for Malaysian Idol.

He says: “It was there that I met Terrence.”

After the reality talent show, Zamil acted with its judge Roslan Aziz in a television advertisement for Plus and starred in the comedy Sadiq And Co and Tunku — The Musical.

“I invited my Tunku co-star Doreen Tang to become a HOT host and she was with us for three years, beginning 2007,” he says.

Terrence, 29, of Georgetown, Penang, is with Zamil the show’s original co-host.
“Zamil and I shared the first year with Carol Lee and Sherry Ibrahim. We were later joined by Annie, Fareezal Razalli, Stephen, Angelene Chong, Doreen and Yasmin.”

The show’s “live wire”, Terrence studied in Penang Free School with Stephen, and has a law degree from the University of London.

Television work is “in his blood” — his cousin Alvin Anthons used to host Let’s Talk.

A DJ and emcee prior to HOT, Terrence made it to the top 120 of Malaysian Idol and the finals of Malaysia’s Top Host.

“For a year now, Stephen, Annie and I have also been hosting Selamat Pagi Malaysia on TV1,” he says. “It’s great to host an English as well as a Bahasa Malaysia talk show as it makes us reach all layers of viewers.”

Kuala Lumpur-born Stephen, 29, is also a law graduate and emcee.

The businessman joined HOT as a reporter two years ago and became its co-host last year. He has also hosted travel magazine Klik Klik Asia, where he visited China, Egypt and Turkey.

Raja Yasmin, 26, of Kuala Lumpur spent four years as a production assistant in TV3 and also hosted children’s programme Voice Out.

A broadcasting graduate from the Malaysian Institute of Integrated Media, she is the sister of musician Raja Farouk.

“I joined HOT after a successful audition last year. Prior to this, I was a freelance host,” she explains.

Zamil says HOT, which comes with the tagline “You’re Hot” and occasionally “Hot, Your Morning Shot”, follows the footsteps of Moving On Two which was a weekly talk show in the 1990s.

“It’s a talk show with an informal setting. The guests have a relaxing, friendly chat with the hosts, on comfy sofas surrounded by a colourful set,” he says.

Terrence says: “Since this year, our set has been round with panels where the guests make an easy entry.”

Stephen says each of the co-hosts goes on the beat to report on “hot and happening” events around the country, four or five days earlier.

“Our beats have catchy names. I handle HOT Pets, Zamil does HOT Food and HOT Travel, Yasmin does HOT Health and HOT Info, and Terrence does HOT Wheels,” he says.

Terrence says: “In our early years, we had a This Day In History segment. Too bad it’s no longer around now.”

The most memorable interview for Raja Yasmin happened a year ago, when she interviewed a hospitalised Zamil.

She says: “Zamil underwent LASIK corrective eye surgery in a private hospital in Kuala Lumpur, and he told me about the process.”

“We showed viewers how such surgery is relatively speedy and painless,” Zamil added.

Zamil’s other memorable interviews include one with John Gray, the best-selling American author of Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus, and last year’s MTV Awards in Genting Highlands.

“I’ve also interviewed fellow Malaysian Idol contestants such as Jaclyn Victor and Dina Nadzir.”

Raja Yasmin’s mother, clinical psychologist Dr Zaitun Sulaiman, has also been interviewed by the HOT crew. “However, I wasn’t on air then,” she says.

Terrence is delighted to have interviewed Bollywood stars Bipasha Basu and John Abraham at the International Indian Film Awards in Genting Highlands. He says: “They are the real HOT!”

Terrence says the talk show’s regular guests include criminologist Kamal Effendi Hashim, clinical psychologist Paul Jambunathan, and neurologist Dr George Lee.

“They are experts in their respective disciplines who think out of the box and converse well with callers,” he says, adding that they learnt a lot from the trio.

Zamil says they also have regular phone-in viewers who speak their minds on various issues.

“There’s Rama from Seri Kembangan, Tom of Kuala Lumpur, Jude Chang of Malacca and two Lingams from Malacca and Kuala Lumpur. We’ve grown to love their honest opinions,” he says.

As singers, Zamil and Terrence have performed Hari Raya songs on air during the festive season.

Zamil says: “And for a while, we had our very own in-house band HOT Fingers.”
While the live show has “sailed smoothly” most of the time, several bloopers have taken place, and given them a good laugh.

“In its first year, a table leg broke on air. Thank God nobody was hurt,” Zamil recollects.

While speaking up is encouraged on air, the hosts make sure the guests do not ‘ruffle feathers’.

Terrence says: “To handle them, we keep as neutral as possible.”
How has the show changed their lives?

Stephen says: “We’ve learnt a lot about our country and become acquainted with brilliant guests whose knowledge enriches our lives.”

Adds Zamil: “We’ve also become close pals on and off the set. For example, we all attended the wedding of Yasmin last year and we’ve kept in touch with our ex-hosts who pay occasional visits.”

The Day I Got Lasik-ed!

What a wonderful birthday present I got this year! After 19 years of wearing spectacles and 15 years of wearing contact lenses, finally I can say goodbye to them. My eyes went through "Bladeless Lasik" today at Prince Court Medical Centre, thanks to Prof Dr Muhaya Hj Mohamad, a renowned ophtamologist.

Alhamdulillah, the lasik surgery went smoothly and according to the Prof, it went on record time of 20 minutes. Just imagine, it only takes 20 minutes to correct your sight! What a technological marvel!

After the surgery, I had to stay back for 3 hours before being checked by the doctor and go home. The first hour of the wait was agonising for me as I felt that my eyes were burning and I was tearing non-stop. They assured me that it was normal and it differed between patients. After that all was well and good.

The best part of this experience, the whole prep and surgery was recorded by my camera crew so it be shown on RTM soon. So stay tuned for that! :)

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes @ Carrefour

Quite a dramatic day. I was just walking around while my manager was buying some groceries at Carrefour Wangsa Maju when there was a commotion outside the supermarket area. Apparently there was a fire at one end of the building which started either from a car that burst into flames in the basement OR something caught fire in the Nagoya textile shop beside the supermarket. We were unclear with the facts, but what was clear was that thick smoke started to cover the building from one end to the other. By the time we were leaving, all of the shops outside the supermarket area were closed. Good thing I had my camera with me to take these shots.

Ever since my dad passed away, it has been difficult for me to ask anyone about our relatives. My dad was always the source of information, as he would know ALL of our family members. Our family is apparently REALLY BIG. If we were to have a wedding in the family, just imagine the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and it's like that, but BIGGER.

I was just browsing through the internet to see what I can find, and I stumbled upon this article. Haji Mahadi is my grandfather's brother, and we usually address him as Tok Ngah. He passed away when I was five years old so I didn't get a chance to remember him except through the movies he acted. According to my mum, he was tall and handsome, and had this aura about him which makes him look almost regal. No wonder he always played a dignitary, usually a Sultan in the movies.

NAMA Haji Mahadi terpahat dalam catatan sejarah filem Melayu sebagai pengarah filem tempatan pertama menerusi filem arahannya iaitu Pertama Di Perlimbahan yang dikeluarkan oleh Malay Film Production pada 1952.

Filem ini membuka satu langkah baru kepada pengarah tempatan lain, terutama pengarah Melayu. Sebelum ini bidang pengarah filem dipelopori pengarah luar, terutama dari India dan Filipina. Filem Permata Di Perlimbahan dibintangi Nordin Ahmad yang berlakon buat pertama kalinya di sisi Maria Menado, Salmah Ibrahim, J Husny dan Suud Jr. Pembabitannya dalam dunia filem dikatakan sebagai kebetulan, apabila beliau tampil sebagai pelakon tambahan dalam filem Penghidupan pada 1951.

Filem terbitan Malay Film Productions (MFP) diarahkan oleh (Datuk L Krishnan) dengan pelakonnya P Ramlee dan Rokiah. Sebelum itu, Haji Mahadi pernah bekerja sebagai wartawan di akhbar Utusan Melayu pada 1939 ketika berusia sekitar 25 tahun. Di MFP, beliau sebenarnya tidak terus menjadi pelakon, tetapi bermula sebagai penterjemah, sebelum dinaikkan pangkat ke jawatan penolong pengarah. Bermula dari situlah, dengan masa yang dianggap singkat beliau dilantik menjadi pengarah utama dengan mengarahkan filem Pertama Di Perlimbahan.

Bagaimanapun, menyedari kebolehannya sebagai pengarah filem belum kukuh, beliau enggan meneruskan tugas itu. Beliau secara jujur pernah pernah berkata: “Saya perlukan pengalaman yang lebih lama.”

Selepas itu, Haji Mahadi kembali berjuang dalam seni lakonan. Hajatnya tercapai apabila beliau ditawarkan berlakon filem Istana Impian (1953) dan Hujan Panas pada 1954. Filem Hujan Panas agak istimewa kerana menyebabkan beliau mendapat gelaran seniman pembantu pujaan yang diberi berdasarkan satu undian nasional. Sejak itu beliau disanjung sebagai seniman serba boleh dengan mendukung peranan dalam beraneka cerita dan ragam, daripada orang tua, muda, baik, miskin, kaya dan sultan, semuanya dapat dilakonkan dengan baik.

Walaupun menerima sanjungan, Haji Mahadi tetap seorang yang merendah diri. Beliau tidak mudah lupa daratan, terutama kepada keluarga dan rakannya. “Tiada perkara yang dapat menyenangkan dan menggembirakan hati saya selain melihat keadaan aman dan tenteram kaum keluarga dan sahabat handai saya,” katanya.

Ketika zamannya, isu kafir mengkafir hangat diperkatakan, lebih-lebih lagi apabila beliau terbabit dalam bidang seni."Hukum agama kita, yang diakui Allah itu luas. Mengapa mesti disempitkan?" katanya apabila diminta mengulas isu itu.

Haji Mahadi daripada keluarga alimKETOKOHAN Haji Mahadi sewajarnya tidak patut dilupakan dalam perfileman nasional tanah air. Kemunculan awal beliau atau nama sebenarnya Haji Mohd Mahadi Haji Mohd Said dalam dunia filem Melayu agak unik. Kalau orang lain seperti P Ramlee, S Roomai Noor, Omar Rojik atau M Amin menjadi pelakon terlebih dulu sebelum dilantik sebagai pengarah. Bagaimanapun, Haji Mahadi bermula sebagai pengarah kemudian menjadi pelakon. Beliau menjadi pelakon selepas mengarahkan filem Permata di Perlimbahan, tetapi berasakan dirinya masih kekurangan pengalaman, beliau enggan meneruskan kerja itu. Sebaliknya beliau memilih menjadi pelakon saja.

Pada mulanya hanya sebagai pelakon pembantu saja dan filem pertama lakonannya ialah Hujan Panas. Sejak itu, dia mula melakonkan pelbagai watak. Malah Haji Mahadi terkenal dengan watak sebagai seorang Sultan.

Antaranya, menjadi Sultan Mansur Shah dalam filem Hang Tuah pada 1956; memegang watak Tun Jana Khatib menerusi filem Singapura Dilanggar Todak (1962); menjadi raja untuk Indera Bangsawan atau sultan dalam filem Raja Laksamana Bintan (1959). Beliau pernah melakonkan watak iblis dalam filem Iman (1954), sebagai Pak Lebai menerusi filem Budi Dan Dosa (1963), atau seorang kaya yang tamak haloba dalam filem Ribut (1956). Bersama P Ramlee dan S Kadarisman, Haji Mahadi sebagai Abdul Wahab menerusi filem Tiga Abdul (1964).

Haji Mahadi mengakui orang seni tidak semestinya datang daripada keluarga yang mempunyai latar belakang seni. Kemunculan beliau membuktikan ada orang seni datang daripada keluarga yang kuat pegangan agamanya .Ini kerana bapa beliau adalah seorang yang alim dan warak serta terkenal sebagai pendukung kemuliaan agama yang murni.Kemuliaannya masih disanjung hingga sekarang.

Haji Mahadi adalah salah seorang anaknya yang lahir di Kampung Merbuk, Negeri Sembilan pada 1914. Beliau kemudian menuntut ilmu di Makkah sejak berusia 13 tahun.Beliau anak kelapan daripada 15 beradik. Antara saudaranya ialah Ahmad Mohd Said iaitu bekas Mufti Besar Negeri Sembilan; Redza sebagai ahli Majlis Mesyuarat Undangan Malaysia dan Abdul Rashid seorang guru agama terkenal di Singapura dan Malaysia.

Haji Mahadi dikatakan anak paling disayangi. Ciri-ciri fizikalnya seperti berwajah tampan dan berkulit cerah kekal hingga ke akhir hayatnya. Beliau tidak mensesiakan pengetahuannya dalam ilmu agama kerana banyak murid yang berguru dengannya.Selang beberapa tahun kembali dari Makkah, Haji Mahadi menukar haluan hidupnya.“Bukan kerana saya tak suka menjadi guru agama, tetapi, ialah sebab pada ketika itu saya rasa diri saya serba kekok kerana dipuja orang yang lebih tua daripada saya,” katanya.Beliau pernah ditanya apa bezanya seorang tokoh agama dengan pelakon, dan menjawab, “Cara pemujaan antara kedua-dua itu berbeza.”

Sepanjang pembabitannya sebagai anak seni, Haji Mahadi pernah berlakon hampir 76 filem. Antara yang dikenali ialah Hang Tuah (1956), Indera Bangsawan (1961), Si Tanggang (1961), Budi Dan Dosa (1962), Tiga Abdul (1964), Jebat Maut (1967) dan Raja Bersiong (1967).

SETIAP kali hadirnya Aidilfitri, pelbagai kenangan indah menerjah fikiran. Malah, situasi yang berbeza itu kalau dapat dikongsi bersama, pasti hebat. Apa tidaknya, setiap tahun sudah tentu banyak peristiwa dilalui sama ada yang manis atau sebaliknya.

Justeru, tiga pengacara Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Sayed Munawar Sayed Mohd Mustar, 36, Ahmad Zamil Mohd Idris, 30, dan Hisham Salleh, 27, sedia berkongsi cerita raya mereka. Masing-masing mempunyai kisah yang menarik.

Sayed Munawar yang mengacarakan Selamat Pagi Malaysia (SPM), berkata sejak berkeluarga, Aidilfitri dirai cukup meriah kerana isteri dan anak. Malah, menjadi kebiasaannya sekeluarga memasak juadah bersama dan istimewanya ia resipi buatan sendiri.

“Setiap tahun begitulah keadaannya. Ada saja juadah baru dicipta dan apa ‘rasanya’ ditolak tepi. Sedap atau tidak, bukan perkara utama kerana yang penting ia menjadi. Alhamdulillah, setakat ini juadah dimasak itu membuka selera untuk dinikmati.

“Saya sangat suka memasak. Disebabkan itu, memang tiada resipi khusus dimasak setiap kali Aidilfitri kerana menunya sentiasa berubah. Dalam soal ini, saya gemar mencuba sesuatu yang baru dan salah satunya diperoleh daripada masakan,” katanya.

Bapa tiga anak ini berkata, dia bertuah kerana isteri dan anak tiada masalah. Setakat ini, mereka tidak membantah apa yang dilakukan. Malah, seronok apabila juadah itu dinikmati seisi keluarga dan ia mengeratkan lagi kasih sayang.

Bagi Hisham pula, kenangan meraikan Aidilfitri di negeri kelahirannya, Sarawak sangat menyeronokkan. Katanya, di sana hari raya akan dirai selama sebulan sama seperti Ramadan. Malah, tempoh itu memang sentiasa diadakan rumah terbuka.

“Budaya kunjung-mengunjung satu keutamaan. Selagi dalam ‘mood’ hari raya, semua orang digalakkan berziarah ke setiap rumah. Selalunya, Aidilfitri pertama akan membabitkan kunjungan di rumah sanak saudara dan hari berikutnya kediaman rakan.

“Pelbagai juadah kuih-kuih dihidangkan. Justeru, kalau keluar rumah dengan perut kosong, bila balik pula sudah kenyang. Di Sarawak, begitulah keadaannya dan ia sangat meriah. Terus-terang, saya amat merinduinya kerana di Kuala Lumpur tidak ada,” katanya.

Pemuda kelahiran Miri dan pengacara baru SPM ini berkata, zaman kanak-kanak lagi seronok. Berkunjung ke setiap rumah bukan saja hendak makan kuih tetapi mencari duit raya. Malah, tidak ketinggalan bermain mercun dan bunga api.

Sementara itu, Zamil yang mengacarakan Hello On Two (HOT) di RTM2, berkata sambutan Aidilfitri bersama Allahyarham bapanya, Datuk Idris Ibrahim tidak dapat dilupakan hingga kini. Katanya, sangat seronok dan saat itu amat dirindui.

“Ketika ayah masih ada, rumah sentiasa meriah. Sambutannya hebat kerana kami sekeluarga akan bergandingan menyediakan segalanya. Namun, sekarang sudah berbeza kerana sejak ketiadaan ayah, tidak macam dulu lagi. Kurang seronok.

“Jadi, saya senang bersederhana. Kami sekeluarga buat apa saja yang menjadi tradisi sebelum ini seperti balik beraya di Seremban pada Aidilfitri pertama. Bertemu sanak- saudara di kampung sedikit sebanyak menghiburkan,” katanya.

Menyentuh perkembangan karier nyanyiannya, Zamil yang pernah menyertai program realiti TV, Malaysian Idol musim pertama berkata, album solonya masih dalam proses.

Katanya, dia tidak mahu tergesa-gesa kerana mahukan hasil terbaik dan berkualiti.
